Having strong support as a type 1 diabetic is one of the most important things for successful control and management.

My Story

When I was first diagnosed I was lucky enough to have a strong support system. My parents were there for me and tried to help as much as they could for every step of the way. As well as this, the doctors at my hospital made sure that I was prepared before heading back into the real world and gave me a number I could always call if I need help.

Every summer before my diagnosis I'd go to summer camp for 1 or 2 weeks. The first summer after I was diagnosed, I was lucky enough to go to a type 1 diabetic camp in Holland. This experience was a huge eye opener for me as I didn't know any other type 1 diabetics at the time. It showed me that there were others out there who understood what I was going through. I finally felt 'normal' again and was able to open myself up.

Another instance which showed the value of the type 1 diabetic community was on the Type 1 Diabetic Youth Challenge in 2017 where I met 11 other teenagers with type 1 and we were instantely able to connect. All of us helped each other during the challenge and we remain in contact now, knowing that if anything goes wrong we have each others' backs.

The types of connections that form between Type 1 diabetics are incredible. The second you meet them it's like you've suddenly found a long lost friend because they share something with you that's impossible to explain to anyone else. If every type 1 diabetic around the world could have such a strong support system and feel part of the community, life would definetly be better. My hope is that this website will be one way to bring others together.
